SmartConsent vs Cookiebot

The Copenhagen-based CMP from the Usercentrics group

Cookiebot is a long-established consent management platform from Cybot (now part of Usercentrics). It pioneered the automated cookie-scan-plus-banner workflow and remains the reference point most teams benchmark against.

Our take

Cookiebot suits teams already inside the Usercentrics ecosystem or those needing its 47-language banner library out of the box. SmartConsent suits teams who want flat pricing that doesn't scale with page count or subpage bands, and a free tier that covers real production traffic rather than a 50-subpage pilot.

Migration

Switching from Cookiebot

Five steps, no downtime. Do it in a staging branch first and verify with the scanner.

  1. Run a scan of your current setup

Use the SmartConsent free scanner to detect what Cookiebot is actually blocking on your live site and what's leaking through.

  2. Export your Cookiebot categories

Cookiebot exposes detected cookies under your account's Cookies tab. Export the list so you can match categories 1:1 in SmartConsent — necessary, preferences, statistics, marketing.

  3. Replace the Cookiebot script tag

Remove the two Cookiebot script tags (uc.js and the CBID loader) and add the single SmartConsent tag. See the installation docs.

  4. Tag your scripts

Cookiebot auto-rewrites script types. SmartConsent uses an explicit `data-consent-category` attribute. Add it to any analytics, marketing, or preferences scripts.

  5. Verify with the scanner

Rerun the scan. A 100/100 score means GA4, ad pixels, and any other tagged scripts are correctly gated behind consent.
